1965 289 Mustang HI-PO "K"

The K-code cars were and are "few and far-between". Including a 6,500 rpm redline, a close ratio 4 speed, and a 3:89 rear axle, speeds in the high 14 second (1/4 mile) times were acheivable. The body of the "K" car was different than the standard 260 or 289 V/8's or even to 200 ci. 6 cylinder. It was the underpinnings and engine that were big and brutal. The famous HI-PO "K-code" Mustang included high-compression, solid-lifters, four-barrel 289 C.I. blasting 271 horsepower and the engine featured upgraded pistons, cylinder heads, carburetor and connecting rods. In addition there was the chrome air cleaner and valve covers. Larger (13/16") front sway bar, A heavy duty suspension system, 14" dual redlines tires standard and the fast ratio (16 to 1) steering. Additionally, a special 4-speed manual transmission was standard on the K-Code whereas all other Mustangs with manual got the three-speed. What was missing were the pleasures in life in 1965 when you wanted the power and performance. Thre was no power steering, power brakes, or air conditioning available from the factory on the K-Code HI-PO. Additionally, the car came with a shorter warranty than the typical Mustang did. K-Code buyers were looking at a 3 month / 4,000 mile warranty instead of the 12 month / 12,000 miles on all other Fords.
