Model Year History Overview:
Model year 1956 was the beginning of the “Big M’ line, an ambitious expansion for Mercury. The 1956 Mercury sported a large exaggerated “M” on the front of its hood which became its advertising and trademark image. 1956 was a facelift and an update of the ’55 styling. Side moldings were connected front-to-back in sort of a lightning bolt motif that was attractive and looked new. Throughout the line, Mercury used an enlarged 312 cid V-8 that provided 210 hp in standard form, up to 235 hp for Monterey and Montclair. It was a downbeat year for the auto industry, but Mercury was a sales exception. Most promising was the Montclair which sold almost as well as it did in 1955. Montclair was the top of the line for Mercury in 1956.

This was a feature car in Rodders Digest, was selected Editors’ Choice at Goodguys and, it also won “Nifty ‘50s Pick” at Charlotte. It is one of only 2,311 1956 Mercury Custom convertibles built. It is a frame-off, every nut and bolt restoration.
