1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Model Year History Overview: The Ford Skyliner retractable hardtop was a unique mid-1957 arrival based on an earlier developmental engineering by the Continental Division. (A Lincoln Mark II retractable was considered, but not produced.) Ford sold 20,766 retractable hardtops in 1957, but production tapered off quickly. The Skyliner was complicated and expensive: in ’57 it cost $350.00 more than a standard convertible. Overall Ford styling for 1957 was particularly simple for the period. It featured a clean, full-width rectangular grille; rakish side moldings; and tiny tailfins. It was a good year for Ford Division. Ford was ahead of Chevrolet for the first time since 1935 in model year production by 130 cars. This was considered a substantial victory. Total 1957 Ford Car Production: 1,655,069 Vehicle Mileage: 85,628 MSRP: $2,942.00 Stock Number C 173-2
