Model Year History Overview:

For 1956 Thunderbird continued the trend started in 1955 offering a small and racy car with a unique look and personality that would set it apart from its contemporaries. Although never intended to be a sports car, it was only 52.1” high and its 102 inch wheelbase was an inch and a half shorter than that of a Model A.
Luxurious enough for the most discriminating buyer, the 1956 model offered plush vinyl upholstery, “Astra-Dial” control panel, adjustable steering wheel, tachometer and clock.  It also offered a 292 CID V-8 engine rated at 202 horsepower (with manual transmission), four barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, plus and optional 312 CID V-8 rated a 225 horsepower with Ford-O-Matic and the 215 horsepower with overdrive,  continental spare tire kit and side air vents.
Although the original two-seated Thunderbird was only manufactured for three years, it was so advanced in concept that its influence in the automobile industry is still being felt.  In 1955 Thunderbird outsold the Chevrolet Corvette 20 to 1.
