1941 Mercury 8 “WOODY” History Overview: Sales of the 1940 Mercury’s were brisk, and it looked for still greater success with its restyled ’41 line. Seven different models were offered, including a 2/4-passenger coupe, business, and station wagon. Styling again was in the Ford mold. Longer, higher, squared-off fenders were accompanied by a divider-bar grille and fender-mounted parking lights. Mercury station wagons in 1941 continued to offer real wood for its siding. Ford Motor Company started building wagons in 1935 at its wood processing plant in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The plant also produced charcoal as a by-product of its wood production. This plant was later sold, but continued to produce charcoal. Interestingly, the manager of the Ford plant and its subsequent owners were named Kingsford. Mercury tried even harder in 1942 with a serious facelift, 100 hp engines and a clutchless transmission called “Liquidmatic”. This car has had a body-off restoration by noted restorer, Lowrey’s Auto Restoration. The exterior clear maple body wood has been replaced. The engine and transmission were rebuilt in 2003 including the installation of a new old stock crankshaft and exhaust manifold. All mechanical components were rebuilt or replaced, including starter, generator, steering box, water pumps, clutch, transmission, rear differential and brakes. Engine bay has Mercury-script radiator hoses and Ford–script belts. All the glass is Ford-script as are the sealed beam headlights. Originally Sold To: N/A Stock Number: C 207
