1962 Thunderbird Sports Roadster
Model Year History Overview:
1962 was the first year for the Thunderbird Sports Roadster. The Sports Roaster was just a standard Thunderbird convertible with a fiberglass tonneau cover hiding the back seat. They were distinguished by having Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels, tonneau cover, a special front fender emblem and a passenger grab bar. All were painted Rangoon Red with Black canvas tops in 1962. The coding for Sports Roadster was established as 76B/85 and76B/89. The last 76B/85 invoiced Sports Roadster was 2Y85Z114640. In 1962 only 1,427 Sports Roadsters were produced; 1,200 were 390 CID 4-barrel carburetor equipped and only 120 were 390 CID Triple 2-barrel carburetor (401HP) on an alloy manifold, deeper-breathing 406 heads and 10:1 compression. They were known as the “M-Birds” because the 5th character in the serial number (VIN) changed from Z to M.
