Model Year History Overview:
The first Chevrolet Corvette began life in 1953.  Corvette was America’s first and only successful fiberglass sports car.  It was the brain-child of the famed GM designer Harley Earl.  Corvette almost died in 1955 due to disappointing sales.  The Thunderbird out-sold Corvette 3 to 1 during the 1955-57 period.  Corvette was fully redesigned in 1956 and continued basically unchanged through 1962.
During this period the original six-cylinder engine gave way to the 265 cid V-8 which evolved first into the 283 cid followed by the 327 cid.  1963 saw the revolutionary Sting Ray, a complete revision of Chevrolet’s sport car.
