1959 Ford Galaxie 500
Retractable Hardtop

Model Year History Overview:
1959 was the last year Ford produced the Skyliner retractable hardtop.  The retractable was a unique mid-1957 arrival based on earlier development engineering by the Continental Division.  (A Continental Mark II retractable was considered, but not produced.)
When the dash-mounted switch was actuated the rear deck lid opened and the hard top lifted, folded and settled into the trunk over a luggage tub.  Ford sold 20,766 retractables in 1957, but production tapered off quickly.  The Skyliner is complicated and expensive; in 1957, it cost $350 more than a standard convertible.
